Senior Checklist for Post-Secondary Planning

September - December
   - Meet individually with your school counselor to...
          * ensure you are on track to graduate
          * have the courses needed to meet admission requirements, and to begin post-secondary planning
          * your counselor will call you down for a meeting.
   - Attend College Night at Benson with your parent/guardian(s) on Sept. 17th at 6 P.M. in the cafeteria.
   - Take or retake the ACT or Compass Test (See Below for more Information)
   - Explore college options and narrow your selection (See Explore College Options for more Information)
   - Complete 2-4 college applications OR military, trade school, apprenticeship, job applications
   - Research and apply for SCHOLARSHIPS (See below for more information)
   - Request letters of recommendation fro your teachers. 
          * Ask in person and in advance. 
          * Let teachers know if you will be using letter for multiple applications.
   - Create an activity resume and essay that can be used for multiple applications
   - Prepare and complete the FAFSA (See Below)


January and February
     - Meet individually with your school counselor to...
          * ensure you are on track to graduate
          * have the courses needed to meet admission requirements, and to begin post-secondary planning
          * your counselor will call you down for a meeting.
   - Prepare and complete the FAFSA (See Below)
   - Continue to research and apply for scholarships


March - May
   - Continue to apply for scholarships
   - Select a college after carefully considering all of your options
   - Make your housing deposit if you plan to stay on campus
   - Request a final transcript to the college you have chosen through Naviance

June and July
   - Apply for student and parent loans if you need them
   - Attend the orientation program at your college

August
   - Start your new adventure! Congratulations on making a choice that will have a positive impact on the rest of your life.


ACT

Seniors are encouraged to take the ACT at the beginning of their senior year and juniors at the end of their junior year.  Students qualifying for free/reduced lunch should see their assigned counselor for a fee waiver.  Students are allowed 2 ACT fee waivers that can be used during junior and/or senior year.  Colleges use your highest composite score for admission and scholarship decisions

ACCUPLACER Test

Most community colleges will accept either the ACT or the ACCUPLACER test.  If you are planning to take the ACCUPLACER, this can be done anytime senior year.

To take the ACCUPLACER Test at Metro Community College, contact their main office at 402-457-2400 to make an appointment.  There is no cost for the ACCUPLACER test.

Benson High School Magnet Scholarship Application

The Benson High School Magnet Scholarship Application should be filled out by seniors with a minimum G.P.A. of 2.5 wishing to be eligible for several Benson High School, Omaha Schools Foundation, and Omaha Education Association scholarships, in which the recipients are selected by the Benson High School Scholarship Committee.  The application, activity resume, essay, and reference form are due Friday, February 10, 2017.

Benson High School Alumni Scholarship Application 
The Benson High School Alumni Scholarship Application should be filled out by students in the top 50% of the senior class wishing to be eligible for one of the six $1500 scholarships awarded by the Benson High School Alumni Association Scholarship Committee.  The application, activity resume, essay, and reference form are due Friday, February 10, 2017.

FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid)

COMPLETING THE FAFSA

   - Create a FSA ID (student and parent) at fafsa.ed.gov.

   - Use 2017-2018 FAFSA Checklist found at www.educationquest.org.

   - Make an appointment with the EducationQuest representative that comes to your school counseling office on Naviance if you need assistance.  Wynter is at Benson every Wednesday.



After you have submitted your FAFSA, you should:

   - Expect your Student Aid Report (SAR).

   - Verify financial aid information with your college if they require it.

   - Expect award notifications from the colleges you have applied to and listed on your FAFSA.

   - Compare financial aid packages from each college you applied to.
